<br />Determination of Standard Prolect FlOOd
<br />Only in fare instances has a specifio streee experI_
<br />enced the largest flood that is potentially possible. Severe as
<br />the maximum known flood may have been On any given etream, it is
<br />generally accepted_that 8 larger flood ~ill eooner or later OCcur.
<br />The Corps of [ngin~~rs, in cooperation with tho Woather Bureau,
<br />has made comprehensive studies and investigations basad on the
<br />vest records of e~perienced stor~s and floods end hes evolved
<br />generalized procedures for estimating the flood potential of
<br />streams. These procedures were used in determining the Standard
<br />Projoct Flood, which is defined e~ the flood that Can be expected
<br />from the most Severe combination of meteorological and hydrow
<br />logicelcornlitionsthotisconeideredreasonablycharscteristic
<br />of the geographical area in which the drainage basin is located,
<br />e~cluding oxtremely rare combinations.
<br />SLamjard Project Flood rainfall estimates were basad
<br />on regionalized stcrm patterns developed by the U.S. Weather Bu_
<br />reeu. Averaged over the drainage area, the estimated rainfalls
<br />
<br />were calculated
