.

ch~racte~istics of stre~s in the general region were compared,
adjusted when necessary, and used for the analysis. Due to the
lack of recorded stage-discharge data and difficulty In correl~
ating elevations, past floods cannot be compared with the Inter_
mediate Regional flood On the study reach.
The maximum known floods that have ocourred ~ithin
the geographical region are listed in Table 6.

.

Determination of Standard Prolect FlOOd
Only in fare instances has a specifio streee experI_
enced the largest flood that is potentially possible. These procedures were used in determining the Standard
Projoct Flood, which is defined e~ the flood that Can be expected
from the most Severe combination of meteorological and hydrow
logicelcornlitionsthotisconeideredreasonablycharscteristic
of the geographical area in which the drainage basin is located,
e~cluding oxtremely rare combinations.
SLamjard Project Flood rainfall estimates were basad
on regionalized stcrm patterns developed by the U.S. Weather Bu_
reeu. Averaged over the drainage area, the estimated rainfalls

were calculated

as 9.9 inches
24 hours,

in 3 hours, 15.2 inches in 6 hours,
Peak discharges of the Standard

,

snd 17.1 inches in
Project Flood'vary

frOm 15,000 cubic feet per seccnd near the

,

upper limit of the study reach to 126,800 cubic feet per second
at the confluence with the Creenhorn River.
