<br />A second coordination meeting was held on October 23, 1979, <br />attended by town and county officials, the town engineer, and the <br />study contractor, Camp Dresser & McKee Inc. Camp Dresser & McKee <br />Inc. informed the Town of their intentions and solicited any <br />information on new developments or existing problems in the study <br />area, <br /> <br />A legal notice was placed in the Del Norte Prospector, one day a <br />week, for three consecutive weeks, beginning October 23, 1979, to <br />notify all interested persons of the beginning of the study and its <br />objectives and to sol icit any rel evant facts and technical data <br />concerning local flood hazards. <br /> <br />Federal, state and local agencies were contacted regarding the <br />availabil ity of any reports, studies, or investigations which may <br />contain information relative to flooding problems in the community. <br />Information was received from FEMA and CWCB. <br /> <br />2.0 AREA STUDIED <br /> <br />2.1 Scope of Study <br /> <br />This Flood Insurance Study is confined to the designated <br />incorporated areas of Rio Grande County, Colorado, as shown on the <br />Vicinity Map (Figure 1). The limits of detailed study in Del Norte <br />were determined by FEMA with community and study contractor <br />consultation at the meeting in June, 1979. <br /> <br />Floods caused by overflow of the Rio Grande were studied in detail <br />wi thin the corporate 1 imits of Del Norte. The areas studied by <br />detailed methods were selected with priority given to all known <br />flood hazard areas, and areas of projected development or proposed <br />constructi on for the next fi ve years, through January, 1985. The <br />scope and methods of study were proposed to and agreed upon by <br />FEMA, and the Town of Del Norte. <br /> <br />2.2 Community Description <br /> <br />The Town of Del Norte is located in south central Colorado in the <br />northern portion of Rio Grande County. The total land area <br />contained within the corporate boundaries is approximately .7 <br />square miles. The Colorado Population Report Series CP-26 #79(C-1) <br />reported the population of Del Norte in 1979, as 1,758 <br />(Reference 1). Economic activi ti es of the area i ncl ude 1 umber, <br />farming, tourism, and some small scale mining. The Great Sand <br />Dunes National Monument, a major tourist attraction, is located 50 <br />mil es to the east. A maj or ski area, Wol f Creek, is southwest of <br />Del Norte. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad main 1 ine <br />pa sses through the town on its route along the Ri 0 Grande River. <br />Traffic on this line is limited to freight and stops are not <br />normally made at Del Norte. <br /> <br />2 <br />
