The area between the floodway and lOO-year flood plain boundaries
is termed the floodway fringe. The floodway fringe encompasses
the portion of the flood plain that could be completely obstructed
without increasing the ~ater-surface elevation of the lOO-year
flood by more than 1.0 foot at any point. Typical relationships
between the floodway and the floodway fringe and their signlficance
to flood plain development are shown in Figure 7.

I.

1"0 "EAr~ rLono PLAIN

'I

r LOODWA I(
F'~INGE

FLOOD ELEVATION w~EN
CONFINED WITHlr~ FLOOQWAY

AREA OF FLOOD PLAIN T....AT COULD
BE uSED FOR OeVELOPMENT flY
RAISING GROUND

FLOOQWAY

FL(')ODwAy
J:F-lH'\l(;e

STREAM
CI-lANNEL

o

FLOOD ELEvATION
BEFonEe~CRnACHMENT
ON F LOaD PLAIN

LINE A8 IS THE FLOOD ELEVATION BEFORE ENCROACHMENT
LINE CO I~ THE FLOOD ELEVATION AFTEA ENCROACHMENT
.SURCHARGE ISNOTTOEXCEEQ 0_3 METER (FfMA ReaUIREMENTl OR LESSER AMOUNT IF SPECIFIED BY STATE

Figure 7.

5.0 INSURANCE APPLICATION

Floodway Schematic

For flood insurance rating purpoaes. flood insurance zone designations
are assigned to a community based on the results of the engineering analy-
ses. These zones are as follows:

Zone A

Zone A is the flood insurance rate zone that corresponds to the
lOa-year flood plains that are determined in the Flood Insurance
Study by approximate methods. Because detailed hydraulic analyses
are not performed for such areas, no base flood elevations or depths
are shown this zone.

53
