The entire area through which Sulphur
Gulch flows is planned for residential development.

Tallman Gulch, draining an area of approximately 6.1 square miles,
flows northwesterly through Douglas County. The detailed-study
area is fram the confluence with Sulphur Gulch 3.0 miles upstream
through residen- tially zoned land.

Bayou Gulch, draining an area of approximately 22.5 square miles,
flows northwesterly through Douglas County. The study reach
extends from the confluence with Cherry Creek to a point 4.0 miles
upstream. The Bayou Gulch drainaqe area is predominantly
agricultural land.

South platte River and Horse Creek, both at Deckers, are located
in Pike National Forest. The South Platte River drains an area of
approximately 2,018 square miles, and Horse Creek drains roughly
211 square miles. The detailed-study areas include 1.4 square
miles of the South Platte River and 0.7 mile of Horse Creek.
Horse Creek perennially flows northwesterly before it joins the
South Platte River at the Douglas-Jefferson County line.

West Creek, draining an area of approximately 61.3 square miles,
flows northerly and discharges into West Creek Lake. The study
area includes 1.5 miles of perennial stream located in Pike
National Forest, approximately 3.5 miles upstream from its con-
fluence with Horse Creek. The mean annual air temperature is 47*F, and
the mean SUDlller air temperature is 66*F.

The northern one-half of the plains area of the county consists of
three basic soil types. Loamy and sandy soils exist on the flood
plains and terraces. Terrain in these areas is nearly level to
gently slopinq to moderately steep, with sandy and gravelly soils
on the uplands. Vegetation is mainly grass, with SOllIe Gambel oak,
mountain mahogany, and ponderosa pine trees (Reference 3). Most
of the remaining area is qently slopinq to moderately steep, with
loamy soils on the uplands.

The southern portion of the plains area is qently sloping to
steep, with sandy soils on the uplands and loamy soils on the
tablelands.
