<br />SCOUR AND DEPOSITION IN RIVERS AND RESERVOIRS <br />THE HYDROLOGIC ENGINEERING CENTER <br />COMPUTER PROGRAM 723-G2-L2470 <br /> <br />INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />1. ORIGIN OF PROGRAM <br /> <br />This program was completed at The Hydrologic Engineering Center by <br />William A. Thomas. Initial work was accomplished by the same author <br />while in the Little Rock District, Corps of Engineers. <br /> <br />2. PURPOSE OF PROGRAM <br /> <br />This is a simulation program designed to analyze scour and deposition <br />by modeling the interaction between the water-sediment mixture, <br />sediment material forming the stream's boundary and the hydraulics <br />of flow. <br /> <br />It is sometimes possible to separate sedimentation studies from <br />those involving the hydraulics of flow. For example, deposition <br />in deep reservoirs can be studied from the standpoint of a reduction <br />in reservoir storage capacity because there is no reentrainment of <br />material once it is deposited. On the other hand, sedimentation <br />studies in shallow reservoirs, downstream from dams or in natural <br />rivers require treatment of the entire movable boundary problem <br />because both scour and deposition are involved. It is for this <br />more general case of problems that this simulation model is designed. <br /> <br />This is not a sediment yield program per se. It simulates the ability <br />of the stream to transport sediment and considers the full range of <br />conditions embodied in Einstein's Bed Load Function plus silt and <br />clay transport and deposition, armoring and the' destruction of the <br />armor layer. <br /> <br />3. LIMITATIONS OF THE PROGRAM <br /> <br />It is a one-dimensional steady flow model with no provision for <br />simulating the development of meanders or specifying a lateral <br />distribution of sediment load across a cross section.
