Ack nowl edgments
The authors are indebted to the members of the Colorado
Hydrometeorological Committee for their encouragement and assistance
over a period of several years as we formulated our ideas, sought and
found funding and eventually completed a new precipitation map for
Colorado. Their assistance in 10catin<J data sources and their critical
review of the final analysis added greatly to the success of this
project.
Sincere thanks to Jim Kircher, Bob ,)arrl?tt and James Blakey of the
U. S. Department of the Interior' Geological Survey Colorado District
Water Resources Division who took on the responsibilities and the
expenses of drafting and printing the precipitation map. We especially
thank Dick Tucker whose ideas, drafting skills, and attention to
details, [lave the map its accuracy and its visuatl appeal. Without the
support of the U. S. Geological Survey this project simp'ly could not
have been completed.
We woul d 1 ike to tl1ank Odi 1 i a: panell a for her secretari al
assistance in completing this report. Jatmes Cowie performed many
analyses and tabul ations resulting in -:he maps of pl"ecipitation
variability. And finally, we want 0111 of the hundreds of weather
observers, whose observations were used in this analysis, to know that
their interest and cooperation over the years has been and will continue
to be greatly appreci ated.
This project was made possible by a grant from the National Climate
Program Office of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration
(Grant No. NA80AA-D-001181 and from fundi1g from the Colorado State
University Experiment Station.

ii
