Regional geomorphology nnd flood hydrology <br /> <br />The Front Range of the Colorado Rocky Mountains <br />is a major physiographic feature that significantly influ- <br />ences the flow of air masses. precipitation intensity and <br />distribution. and flood runoff (Hansen et aI.. 1978). <br />The primary cause of Bash floods in the Colorado Front <br />Range is summer thunderstorms thatcan be particularly <br />severe in the foothills and piedmont (Fig. I). The foot- <br /> <br />o S <br />J/J 1 J)" I <br />Q S 1Q <br /> <br />hillSlone (McCainetal.. 1979. p. 3) encompasses the <br />region between abour 1700 and 2400 m elevation and <br />. is almost entirely within the lower montane forest <br />(Marr. 1961). This area is characterized by an open <br />forest of Ponder os a pine and Douglas fir with scattered <br />shrubs. herbs and grasses (Marr. 1961). The lower part <br />of the gulch near Horsetooth Reservoir is within the <br />grassland zone (Marr, 1961).
