<br />. <br /> <br />THE STUDY AREA <br />The portion of the South Platte River which flows through the Denver <br />metropolitan region includes the 45 stream miles from Waterton to Brighton, <br />Colorado. The South Platte River at Denver carriea runoff from a drainage <br /> <br /> <br />area totaling 4,850 square miles. Approximately 2,620 square miles of <br /> <br /> <br />this drainage area lies in the mountains above Waterton, Colorado. The <br /> <br /> <br />remaining 2,230 square miles are drained by the major and minor tribu- <br /> <br /> <br />taries which join the South Platte River between Waterton and Brighton. <br /> <br /> <br />The major tributaries, Plum Creek, Bear Creek, Cherry Creek, Sand Creek <br /> <br /> <br />and Clear Creek, drain a total of 1,761 square miles. Figure 2 illus- <br /> <br /> <br />trates the relative size of contributing drainage areas. <br /> <br />4 <br />
