Snmrmelt runoff beginning about
mid-April was augmented by prolonged rainfall on 5-6 May to
produce the flooding that occurred in the South Platt.e River
basin. The flooding was characteri.zed by high, sharp peaks
from the rainfall runoff, followed by a gradual recession due
to the extended snowmelt runoff. Consequently, the South
Platte River continued to run bankful during most of May and
on into the month of June.

b. Flooding i,Q the North Platte River basin was caused
mainly by snowmelt runoff from tributar-y streams including
the Laramie River, 'which is the princ:lpal tributary. With the
exception of some isolated flash flooding on minor drainages,
the flooding in the North Platte River basin "as characteri2:ed.
by prolonged peak flows from small un,l~ontrolled tributary streams.

c. The combined flows from the North Platte and South Platte
Rivers produced ree,ord or near-record stages on the Platte Ftiver.
Extensive lowland flooding occurred e~long the river from North
Platte, Nebraska to the mouth of the :Loup River. Observers
reported the lack of a definable crest as the slow-moving flood.,
proceeded downstream. The "leading-edge" of the flood was
described as a lake,-like body of water approximately 65 miles
long, 1.5 miJ.es wiele, and moving at a velocity of between one-
half mile to 1 mile an hour.

n
