FLOOD HYDROLOGY - PlATTE RIVE:R <br /> <br />a. General. The North Platte and South Platte Rivers join <br />near North Platte to form the mail\ stem of the Platte River, ;ffiich <br />continues across the State of Nebraska and empties into the <br />Missouri River about 10 miles south of Omaha. Two major tribu- <br />taries empty into this reach of the Platte River - - the Loup <br />River, drainage area 15,200 squarE! miles, and the Elkhorn River, <br />drainage area 6,900 square miles. In the 1973 flood" the <br />combination of the South Platte R:lver and North Platte River <br />flows produced record or near-record flows along the main stem <br />of the Platte River to the lOOuth C,f the Loup River. The Loup <br />and Elkhorn Rivers did not, howevl!r, produce significantly large <br />contributions to the floodflollll C()ming from the upper basin.. As <br />a result, the flood peaks experienced on the Platte River downstream <br />frOlll the lOOuth of the Loup River >rere not unusually high. <br /> <br />b. Peak discharp;es.
