At age 79, her home is all she has, so it is
a very frightening situation. In 1936 she remembers her slippers floating out
the front door. She lost trees and shrubs in 1981 but could not afford to
replace them. The City crew cleaned up about four inches of mud, and debris
after the south Glenwood area was cleaned. Melba worked many days and evenings
cleaning in July, August and September of 1981, after storms.
John Taufer, 832 Minter Avenue, had his front lawn covered with
approximately 2 inches of mud and debris with clean-up taking about 2 days of
labor.
Darryl Queen, 819 Bennett, had mud and debris in his front yard, on the
sidewalk and gutter. He received a bruised foot from a board in the water and
had to make a doctor's office visit to have it checked. There was some minor
settling, and excessive damage to his grass, damage to the garden and erosion of
the front parkway. He sandbagged across the front of his house at the time of
the flood and there is now a berm from 9th & Bennett to his property which had a
day's labor for each household so protected. Clean-up took 2 days, and his time
lost from work cost $120.
Lloyd and Patricia Barry Levy, 515 E. Ninth Street, h~ 2 1/2 feet of water
and mud in their basement. Mud covered the lawn and concrete on the west and
north sides of the house. This storm caused a slight increase in settling and
$925.00 total costs plus 2 days labor outside, 5 days inside. Breakdown of
costs were:
Pumping out basement
Furnace fan cleaning
Loss of stored household effects

$
$
$

100.00
125.00
200.00
