This is confined to the
northwestern area of the county.

Detailed information on floods before the turn of the century is very limited. Information on
historical flooding is based on newspaper accounts and interviews with longtime residents of the
area. Generally, high flows are contained in-channel, and extensive overbank flooding is
infrequent. Large floods occurred in Gunnison on the Gunnison River in 1917, 1918, 1920,
1921, 1957, 1984, and 1985. These floods have caused major damage by disrupting highway and
railroad traffic and communication services, drowning livestock, and destroying agricultural
land, roads, bridges, and buildings.

(Note: Information from 1989 Flood Insurance Study)

Previous Studies
A portion of the information contained in the PIS was taken from the 1980 Flood Hazard
Identification Report, Hotchkiss to Somerset, CO, prepared by the Corps of Engineers,
Sacramento District, and the December 1976 Floodplain Information Report, Gunnison
Riverrromichi Creek, Gunnison, CO, prepared by Engineering Consultants, Inc. A catalog of
previous studies is shown in the Appendix.

Community Response to the CWCB Desimation and Approval Process
A letter from the CWCB was transmitted to Gunnison County regarding the Board's proposed
action for designation and approval of the Gunnison County FIRMs. At the time of this report,
CWCB had not received a letter back from the County requesting designation. However, during
a phone call meeting with the County as a part of this study, the County indicated that they were
receptive to the Board's proposed designation action and would return a designation request
letter. The County also indicated that several of the streams with development pressure are
currently being studied and will have more accurate flood plain mapping generated. The County
did not request a meeting with the CWCB regarding this matter nor was a field review of the
study conducted.

3
