<br />calcium hypochlorite (swimming pool chlorine), bleach, anmonia, <br />lime, detergents <br />charcoal, coal, coal dust, coke, and hay are subject to spontaneous <br />combustion when wet or moist <br />gasoline, acetone, benzyne <br />drugs, food (unless in tin cans) <br />storage tanks inadequately anchored can float and cause damage to <br />walls, ceilings, and other contents <br /> <br />Finally, here is a list of products that are particularly subject to <br />flood damage. They should be removed, if possible, from any flood- <br />prone areas as an extra precautio~: <br /> <br />appliances, clocks, and other electric motors <br />art works, musical instruments <br />books, magazines, papers <br />clothing, curtains <br />televisions, radios, electronic equipment <br />upholstered furniture, mattresses <br />cabinets, pool tables, and similar wood furniture <br />that would become useless with only a little warping <br /> <br />Advantages of Wet Floodproofing <br /> <br />No matter how little you do, some wet floodproofing will reduce flood <br />damages to your house and its contents. <br /> <br />No loads placed on your walls and floor. <br /> <br />No worry about sewer back-up. <br /> <br />Even if the flood heights are higher than your protection level, the <br />results will not be as damaging as with other measures. <br /> <br />Problems with Wet Floodproofing <br /> <br />The evacuation plan will probably be dependent on human intervention <br />(see section I.H.). <br /> <br />No reduction in regular program flood insurance rates. However, if the <br />floodable area was cleared out to such an extent that it would be de- <br />clared "non-habitable", there could be a reduction in rates. <br /> <br />Your house will get wet inside and you will have to adjust to a new way <br />of using the floodable area. <br /> <br />Costs: <br /> <br />Rearranging utility systems (consult a contractor). <br /> <br />Labor to move things. <br /> <br />Flood insurance policy to cover items not moved or protected. <br /> <br />21 <br />
