And, on all projects funded di- <br />rectly by the federal government, Presidential Executive <br />Orders require special consideration of flooding issues <br />(E.O. 11988) and protection of wetlands (E.o. 11990). <br />Such requirements should be checked by referring to <br />the appropriate federal agency (see Resource Index for <br />list of agencies and their regional offices). <br /> <br />Dood Hazard Data <br /> <br />Flood hazard data identifies essential flood-related fac- <br />tors for both the general region and the specific site. <br />This basic data helps determine the degree of hazard <br />that is likely at any proposed site, identifies the expected <br />impacts of proposed development on future flooding <br />severity, and provides the necessary information for <br />evaluating and choosing mitigation strategies. <br /> <br />Hydrologic: Data <br />Much of the data relevant to damage mitigation con- <br />cerns the flow of water associated with the various <br />stages in the hydrologic cycle. A variety of components <br />of the natural system-both riverine and coastal-com- <br />bine to cause flooding. The designer must analyze these <br />components to understand the threat from flooding that <br />is to be mitigated in design. <br /> <br />Hydrologic data is available from numerous sources. <br />Various governmental agencies carry out floodplain <br />technical studies, the scope and content of which varies <br />according to the needs of each agency.
