<br /> <br />that is safe, leaving the flood-prone part free of build- <br />ings but still usable as recreation space or parking. <br />Any of various local planning techniques can be <br />used to control development to reduce flood damage. <br />The designer should refer to these regulations to iden- <br />tify both restrictions that will apply to proposed build- <br />ings and opportunities that may be presented by plan- <br />ning regulations such as the PUD ordinance. The local <br />planning agency is also a primary information resource <br />for the designer. In addition to zoning maps, it will often <br />provide access to other data that is useful in identifying <br />flood hazards, such as is contained in the variety of <br />technical floodplain studies. <br />Building Codes. Building codes are used in- <br />frequently to address the specific problems of flood <br />damage.
