FLOOD INSURANCE STUDY

1,0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Purpose of Study

The purpose of this Flood Insurance Study is to investigate the
existence and severity of flood hazards in the Town of Steamboat
Springs, Routt County, Colorado, and to aid in the administration
of the Flood Insurance Act of 1968 and the Flood Disaster Protec-
tion Act of 1973. Initial use of this information will be to
convert Steamboat Springs to the regular program of flood insurance
by the Federal Insurance Administration. Further use of the infor-
mation will be made by local and regional planners in their efforts
to promote sound land use and flood plain development.

1.2 Coordination

Prior to initiation of this Flood Insurance study, the u.s. Army
Corps of Engineers, Sacramento District, was engaged in making a
Flood Plain Information study of the steamboat Springs area. That
study, which was being conducted under the authority of Section 206
of the 1960 Flood Control Act (Public Law 86-645), as amended, was
discontinued on authorization of the Flood Insurance Study. A
brief, interim report on the flood situation in steamboat Springs
was published in lieu of a Flood Plain Information report, and
information and materials developed for the Flood Plain Information
study were used in the Flood Insurance Study (Reference I). The
search for basic data for both reports included sending a notice of
study initiation to a standardized list of interagency addressees.
Each notice included a request for an expression of interest in the
study and information on pertinent data and materials that could be
made available. Possibly productive leads, thus developed, were
followed up during the course of the studies.
