Location of areas flooded, Damages from the May 1955 flood on <br />the Arkansas River and tributari<s were concentrated along the main: stem <br />of the Arkansas River between Pueblo and John Martin Dam; along the : <br />Purgatoire River from Weston to Alfalfa, and from Ninemile Dam to tije <br />mouth; and on Raton Creek from Morley to the mouth, Tributary inflow <br />below John Martin Dam caused the Arkansas River to overflow its banks <br />,. <br />at a few points and caused an insignificant amount of damage, Minof <br />flooding occurred on the St, Charles, Huerfano, and Apishapa Rivers; and <br />on Wolf Creek, The locations of the flooded areas are shown on plate 11, <br />I <br /> <br />4-04. Extent of area flooded. Approximately 39,000 acres of tand <br />were flooded between Pueblo and John Martin Dani along the main stem I of <br />the Arkansas River, Of this, about 8,000 acres are cultivated, 22,QOO <br />acres are in pasture, and 9,000 acres are river channel and wastelaOd, <br />Urban lands flooded in this reach consisted of about 250 acres in : <br />La Junta and North La Junta, and a few acres' in Las Animas. , <br />I <br />. ' <br />4-05, Within the reach of the upper Purgato~re River from Weston <br />. , <br />to Alfalfa, over 700 acres of cultivated land were flooded along wi~h <br />190 acres of urban land at Trinidad, In addition, about 200 acres ~f <br />cultivated land were destroyed by bank erosion; only a minor amount:of <br />pasture land was flooded in this reach, In the reach between Alfalfa <br />and Ninemile Dam the Purgatoire River is ina canyon ssction and no: <br />damages were incurred, On the lower Purgatoire River, between NineIl1ile <br />Dam and the mouth, there were more than 700 cultivated acres and 350 <br />. , <br />acres of oasture inundated, In addition, about 140 acres were lost: <br />by bank erosion, most of which was. in cultivation, <br /> <br />4-06. Raton Creek, a tributary of the Purgatoire River, flooded <br />about 20 acres of cultivated land and several acres of urban property <br />at Starkville, Also, about 4 acres of cultivated land were lost frQm <br />bank erosion. <br /> <br />4-07.
