In accordance with paragraph 4223.03b of otders <br />and Regulations. a request for funds in the amount of $7.300 was made <br />to the Division Engineer in letter dated 3 June 1955. subject' "Reguest <br />for Allotment of Funds to Prepare Report on Flood of 19-21 Y~y 1955. <br />Arkansas River and Tributaries. Colorado." Advice of Allotment <br />number C-1264 dated 13 June 1955 for the amount requested was rece~ved <br />28 June 1955. authorizing preparation of this report. which is mad" in <br />, compliance with paragraph 4223.05d. This report presents a summary of all hydrologic and <br />flood damage data; flood fighting activities and disaster relief. and <br />an evaluation of the effects of existing and proposed flood controi <br />projects. <br /> <br />1 <br />I <br />'I <br />I <br />1 <br />2-01. General. During the period 17-20 }flaY 1955. a strong i <br />easterly flow of moist air between a Low over the Mexican border 'and <br />a High over the northwestern United States resulted in heavy precipi- <br />tation over the plains and lower mo~tains of eastern Colorado and, <br />northeastern New Mexico and over the plains of western Kansas. He'lVY <br />rainfall occurred over the plains area. Over the mountain area. the <br />precipitation was mostly in the form of deep wet snowfall. <br /> <br />II <br /> <br />STORM DATA <br /> <br />I <br />I <br />2-02. SY!lootic Situation. On 16-17 May 1955 the surface weather <br />maps showed a cold front over the eastern portions of Colorado andiNew <br />Mexico advancing slowly into western Kansas and the panhandle sections <br />of Oklahoma and Texas. This front remained stationary in west-central <br />Kansas until th,e evening of the 18th. then moved slowly eastward w.!fth <br />a squall line extending through western Kansas and western Texas. IThe <br />area was dominated b.y a High from the evening of the 19th through 1he <br />21st. during which time little or no precipitat~on occurred. Another <br />cold front moving through on the 22nd and 23rd caused scattered thun- <br />dershowers, but amounts were generally light and added little rain~all <br />to that which occurred earlier.
