,
5-0i3. Authorized proiects. The only Federal project which has ,been
authoriz~d for construction in ,the area is a floodway on the Purgatoire
River th'rough the city of Trinidad. This project. is designed to' control
flows uJ to 45,000 cubic feet per second at Trinidad. Since ,the May 1955
, ,
flood ha~ a peak discharge of only 30,000 cubic feet per second at this
point, all of the urban damages that occurred at Trinidad, amounting to
about $1,200,000, would have been prevented. .
,
,
5-~. Recommended Federal proiects A project consisting of a
multiple'-purpose dam and reservoir, which would be located on the Purga-
toire Ri~er about 4 miles above Trinidad, has been recommended in lieu
,
of the authorized Trinidad Floodway described above. This project would
,
afford ~ greater degree of flood protection to Trinidad than the author-
ized floodway; also, it would protect the rural areas above and below the
city froln large-magnitude floods, and provide a dependable water supply
for the ,irrigated acreage below the project. Had this project been in
operatiop during the May 1955 flood the damages on the Purgatoire River
would h~ve been reduced qy about $1,700,000.
