Expept a't <br />the urban areas previously described, the damage to utilities and commu- <br />nioation facilities was minor and where interruption of service oopurred <br />it was only for a short period. : <br />I <br />, <br />4-15. Urban losses. The heaviest conoentration of urban damage <br />I <br />occurred at Trinidad on the Purgatoire River where 115 residences,: 24 <br />business units, and 2 public buildings were affected. Seven residences <br />were completely destroyed because of bank erosion. Damage to railroad <br />I <br />property owned by the Santa Fe, Rio Grande, and Colorado and Southern <br />railroads. ranked second to residential damage in monetary value. :t1ajor <br />damage also occurred to other transportation facilities, utilities:, and <br />bank protection works. Damages at Trinidad are classified in tabl~ 8. <br /> <br />, <br />4-16. A heavy concentration of urban damage also occurred atiNorth <br />La Junta, an unincorporated residential section lying on the north~ or <br />left bank of the Arkansas River directly across from the city of ~ Junta. <br />There were 236 residential units, 5 business units, 1 school, and 1 church <br />in the flooded area of North La Junta. . Intense structural damage ~as ex~ <br />perienced in addition to damage to furniture, appliances, other personal <br />property, and lawns and shrurbery. Streets and public utilities were <br />, <br />heavily damaged as well as individual water supply systems and sew~ge <br />disposal units. A low levee to protect against minor overflows on1the <br />Arkansas River was lost and two bridges were damaged. : <br />.' <br />I <br />4-17. Damage in the city of La Junta on the south, or right bank <br />of the Arkansas River was not so severe as tha t on the north side.: Ten <br />I <br />business units and 51 residences were affected and most of the damage was <br />to business stock and equipment. Residential damage was confined iargely <br />to personal property. Damage to public utilities was also relativ~ly <br />~M. : <br />I <br />, I <br />4-18. The only area other than La Junta where overflow from the <br />main stem of the Arkansas River resulted in damage to urban property was <br />at Las Animas. The townspeople constructed a short dike at this P?int <br />whioh prevented floodwaters from entering most of the town, and a few <br />houses not proteoted by the dike sustained minor damage. Damages at <br />La Junta, North La Junta and Las Animas are shown in table 6 according <br />to property olassifications. : <br />, <br />I <br />4-19. Considerable urban damage also occurred at Starkville from <br />Raton Creek, where 19 residential units, 4 business units, and a church <br />were in the path of the floodwaters. The residences that were fl06ded <br />I <br />were close to the channel and beoause of bank caving a few of themlwere <br />rendered unsafe for further habitation. The water line supplying the <br />town Was damaged by the flood ana water had to be hauled in for abQut <br />two months.
