This lateral is a small, unlined channel which flows
northwesterly direction about five miles, where it discharges into the
Loutzenhizer Wash. The lateral provides irrigation water to about 4,000
acres along the east edge of the UVRP (see Appendix A).

Additional flows are diverted from this lateral into the Cedar Creek
Wasteway. The wasteway is actually Cedar Creek, a small tributary of the
Uncompah9re River. The purpose of this diversion is to convey additional
flows into the river to meet irrigation demands downstream of the Selig
Canal. Historically, flows diverted through the wasteway (see Appendix A)
have been quite small in comparison to the total flow in the South Canal.

Downstream from the gauging station, flows are diverted from the South
Canal into the West Canal, which is described in subsequent sections of this
report. Other diversions are made into smaller laterals which irrigate
about 3,000 acres adjacent to the canal. These diversions are recorded,
although long-term records are not available. Estimates of flow diverted
into these laterals were made using ditch rider records provided by the
UVWUA. Six years of records were available (see Table 2.2). Added to these
flows are estimates of losses due to seepage and evaporation from the South
Canal (assumed to be equal to the lateral demands), and estimates of
diversions made for the Project 7 Water Treatment facility. For the latter
quantity, an average diversion of 5,792 acre-feet per year was assumed.

- 2.5 -

~" .
i-'.:-
......
