The Big Thompson Flood has killed 139 with five persons

still recorded as missing. Damage estimates currently exceed $28 million.

A similar but less devastating flash flood occurred near Red Feather Camp-

ground on July 19, 1973. Peak rainfall reached 6.42 inches in 4 hours at

Red Feathers. Fort Collins received only 0.48 of an inch downtown and

2.20 inches at CSU Foothills Campus.

It is interesting to note that on June 13, 19?6 a flash flood of

10.5 inches of rain fell in the Black Hills of South Dakota. This flash

flood caused one death, five injuries, and $6.6 million of property

damage. The rainfall placed this flood in the 100 year plus recurrence

range. Yet it occurred just four years and four days to the date of the

200 year Black Hills Flood of 1972. Clearly, the occurrence of such

flash floods isn't a rare event and, while the chances of anyone canyon

flooding are remote, they certainly are not rare.
