Some river meander loops have been cut off; decreasing the sinuosity of the river to 1.20.
. Some eroding banks have been stabilized, in the past with rubble, but more frequently
now with riprap.
. There are more bridges, weirs, grade-control structures, intakes, and sewer outfalls.
. There are some houses and other buildings on the historic floodplain.
. In places, the low bank has been filled with excavated materials.
. There are fewer bars and less native vegetation but still evidence of wildlife,
. The river is still wide and shallow in some places,
. There are many ponds and levees left by gravel mining operations.

Urban River

. The river has been straightened and realigned. Sinuosity is 1. 09.
. The river's flood channel is narrow and relatively deep compared to the Rural river.
. Except during periods of very low flow, there are hardly any exposed bars.
. There is much less riparian vegetation.
. The river is bounded by very high-valued lands.
. Human works are everywhere.

Engineered River

. The river has been realigned, straightened, and made prismatic.
. The entire river banks are protected with riprap.
. The bed is nearly flat with only a few low bars,
. The width is mostly unifonn,
. Slowly, pioneer vegetation is appearing on the few bars and in the bank riprap.

Oassified River. On the basis of river width, bar height, and other observed features, the South
Platte River in the Denver metropolitan area is classified as follows:

Type Reach Cross Sections

Rural I 68th Avenue (Baseline Road) to I to 17
l04th Avenue
Suburban 104th Avenue to Interstate 270 18 to 28
Urban Interstate 270 to Oxford Avenue 29 to 43
Engineered Oxford Avenue to Brown Ditch 44 to 48
Diversion
Suburban Brown Ditch Diversion to Near 49 to 52
Highway C-470
Rural Near Highway C-470 to Chatfield 53
Dam
3
