The old cottonwoods along the irrigation ditches and on the South <br />Platte floodplain are disappearing. This old sentinel was done in by the lack of <br />water when the pond in the former gravel pit behind had been dewatered. Old <br />age, gravel pit mining, and bank erosion are the main causes of the loss. No <br />large new senior cottonwoods are appearing in their places. Old cottonwoods are <br />primarily in the Rural reach, from McKay Road to Brighton. The environment <br />is too dry for new seedlings - flood waters do not reach these levels with enough <br />regularity. <br />
