Figure 8 - 14th Street oulvert. Hubbard Gulch Creek.
Flood Damage Reduction Measures.

ReservoIrs In the Colorado River Basin above Rifle are operated

for water conservation purposes and consequently provide only Inci-

dental flood protection to the Rifle area. This Incidental storage,

trans-mountain diversions, and Irrigation uses have served to reduce

peak flows for very large floods In the study area.

In 1972, riprap bank protection was provided along approximately
1,000 feet of the river to prevent underminIng of the city's sewage
treatment lagoon levee. The work was done by the Corps of EngIneers
under the authority of Section 14 of the 1946 Flood Control Act.

Rifle Gap Reservoir, which Is operated for IrrIgatIon water supply,
provIdes Incidental protection to the study area from cloudburst runoff
originating upstream of the dam.

The Corps of EngIneers is presently conductIng an InvestIgation of
the Upper Colorado River BasIn; however, no flood control facilities
are presently proposed.

12
