II GENERAL BASIN DESCRIPTION

The Dry Gulch watershed lies in the westerly portion of the Denver

Metropolitan region, predominantly in the City of Lakewood, with

the remainder in the City of Denver. Its general location is

illustrated in Figure II-l. The basin consists of gradually

sloping, relatively level land with few dominant hills or ridges.

The basin is drained by two principal channels -- Dry Gulch

and North Dry Gulch. These gulches are still visible in their

natural states in selected locations, but the urbanization of

the region has forced the channels out of their natural equilib-

rium. There have been two major causes of this imbalance of

the equilibrium state. The first cause is the change in land

surface from natural, vegetated soil to impervious ground covers

of streets, parking lots, and buildings. Because of this change,

a greater portion of the rainfall in the watershed is conveyed

to the channels, and a lesser portion is able to infiltrate into

the ground. The second cause of the imbalance is the constric-

tion or obliteration of the channels themselves. The channels

have been frequently replaced by small culverts which prevent

the natural conveyance of large flows, change the sediment carry-

ing characteristics, and promote erosion or deposition of soil

at unnatural locations.

As a result, the Dry Gulch and North Dry Gulch Channels have

been removed from their natural service and cast in the roles
