This study w'~s performed under the <br />authority of section 22 of Public I~al" 93-251, Water Resources <br />Development Act of 1974, Planning Assistance to St:ates, and a <br />request from the Colorado Water Conservation Board. section <br />22 provides the authority for t.he Corps e)f Engineers <br />cooperation with the States for assistance in preparing <br />comprehensive state water plans for the developmemt, use and <br />conservation of available water resources. This effort was <br />accomplished through a coordinated E!ffort ~1ith the Colorado <br />jvater Conservation Board to enhanCE' its planning of water <br />resource projects pertaining to flood control, <br /> <br />1.2 Scope and Objectives. '[,hl~ prima,ry rJbjective of <br />1:he section 22 study was to develop hydraulic data needed to <br />plot approximate IOO-year flooded area outlines along the <br />South Platte River between Sterling and Atwocd, Colorado. The <br />results will be used in developinsr ,~ comprElhensive plan for <br />1:he South Platte River Floodplain. <br /> <br />;t.3 Location. The Ci1:ies o:E Sterling and Atwood are <br />located in the Northeast corner of Colorado in Logan County. <br />Sterling is located on the left bank of the South Platte River <br />at its junction with U.S. Highway 6. A'twood is located <br />approximately 5.6 miles upstream of Sterling on t:he left bank <br />of the South Platte, River at its junction with Colorado state <br />Highway 63. <br /> <br />;L., BACKGROUND DATA. <br /> <br />?-.1 Survev Information. Detailed mapping or cross <br />sections were not available for t:he, study reach. The data <br />used for the study was taken from t,he U. S. G. S, 7.5 minute <br />Quadrangle maps wi th 10 foot contour int:erval. This <br />information was supplemented 1.ith 'I;he Dec,ember 1976 cross <br />section survey information used in '1;l1e sterling Flood Plain <br />Information Study. <br /> <br />4 <br />
