Lloyd2 P.E. <br /> <br />Abstract <br /> <br />The Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (District) is <br />involved in the pl,mning, design, construction and maintenance of <br />drainage and flood control facilities in the Denver area. One tool <br />available to the District and local governments is the acquisition of flood <br />prone properties and relocation or demolition of flood prone structures. <br />Several successful examples of this concept are presented. <br /> <br />tit Introduction <br /> <br />The Urban Drainage and Flood Control District (District) is a <br />regional agency established by the Colorado legislature in 1969 to assist <br />Denver area local governments with multi-jurisdictional drainage and <br />flood control problems. The District is involved in the planning, design, <br />construction and maintenance of drainage and flood control facilities; in <br />addition to assi'3ting local governments in a variety of floodplain <br />management activities including floodplain l'egulation, flood insurance, <br />flood warning and public information. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br />DeGroot <br /> <br /> <br />One floodplain management tool available to the District and local <br />governments is the acquisition and relocation or demolition of flood prone <br />structures, usually before they are flooded. This concept is one that is <br />receiving tremendous support in certain areas of the floodplain <br />management community. Unfortunately, there are a number of problems <br />associated with the implementation of this concept which must be <br />overcome before it can be considered a viable option in most instances. <br />Nonetheless, there have been a number of occasions in which the District <br /> <br />e !Chief, Floodplain Management Program; 2Chief, Design and Construction <br />Program; Urban Drainage and Flood Control District, Denver, CO. <br />
