<br />LESSON 5 <br /> <br />STREAM STABILITY - LEVEL 2 ANALYSIS PROCEDURIES <br /> <br />L LEVEL 2: BASIC ENGINEERING ANALYSIS <br /> <br />A. Flow chart of the typical steps in L.evel 2 analysis, The eight steps <br />identified are generally applicable to most stream stability problems. <br /> <br />B, Completion of Level 2: analysis leads to a conclusion regardin9 the need <br />for more detailed analysis (Level 3) or to proceed directly to complete the <br />design/scour evaluation of the bridge or selection and design of <br />countermeasures based only on the Level 1 and Level 2 assessments. <br /> <br />C, HEC-20 Chapter 4 (pp 57-63) provides a generalized discussion of the <br />Level 2 Basic Engineering Analysis steps. The Participant should review <br />the generic discussion of each of the Level 2 steps. To illustrate the <br />application of a Level 2 analysis to an actual problem in the field, the <br />remainder of this lesson will present a Level 2 analysis of the causes of the <br />March 10, 1995 failure of the 1-5 bridges near Coalinga, California (see <br />Lesson 4 for Level 1 analysis). <br /> <br />NOTES: <br /> <br />5.1 <br />
