LESSON 2

STREAM STABILITY - GEOMORPHIC FACTORS AND PRINCIPLES

I. FLUVIAL. CYCLES AND PROCESSES

A. Geomorphology is the science that deals with the relief features of the
earth's surface. Fluvial systems are those systems related to streams or
rivers, Therefore, fluvial geomorphology is the science dElaling with the
profiles and planforms of streams and rivers,

B. Rivers are dynamic, always changing their position, shape and other
morphological characteristics with variation in discharge and the passage
of time.

C. When a channel at or nl~ar a bridge is modified, this local change
frequently causes modification of channel characteristics both up.. and
downstream. Conversely, channel modifications above or below the brk:lge
reach can affect channel characteristics in the bridge f1~ach.

NOTES:

2,1
