ARKANSAS RIVER BASIN, COLORADO, KANSAS, NEW MEXICO D21

have exceeded the peak flow of Two Butte Creek. The floodwaters inun-
dated the town of Holly and were the cause of the flooding that extended to
Great Bend, Kans. The flood crest on the Arkansas River from above
Lamar, Colo" and from Clay Creek did not reach Holly until late the next
day. It caused high secondary peaks and high sustained runoff.
Flooding occurred downstream from Holly, Colo" through Syracuse,
Garden City, Dodge City, Kinsley, and Great Bend, Kans., with accom-
panying attenuation (fig. 11). Timing was fortunate because coincident
flood crests from the tributaries and on the Arkansas River would have been
destructive beyond imagination, Even so, damage was extensive in Kansas.
The flood front approaching Dodge City is dramatically illustrated by two
aerial photographs (fig. 12).
Peak discharges exceeded those of the 50-year frequency and those
previously known at all gaging stations on the Arkansas River from
Coolidge to Grent Bend, Kans.

140
130
il120
"
"
~ 110
"
~ 100
"
~ 90
~
"
0; 80
"
"
~
" 70
~
"
z 60
..
~
"
" 50
'"
....
~ 40
"'
"
" 30
..
'"
"
~ 20
25
10
0 18

--\-(74lAtDodieCitY,Kans.

\

\
\ r,
\1 ,__......\-
",' \ (75) Near Kinsley, Kans.
!
