.

In many cases the required source maps are current and available; however,
in some cases the source map manuscript requires revision prior to utilization
as a base for the County Maps. In still other circumstances it will be neces-
sary to first produce the appropriate source map and then construct the County
Map. it should be noted that thE' neat lines of the source maps and the County
Maps m~y not always coincide.

FUNDING

County Map production is cooperatively funded by USGS and the State of Colorado,
the latter through the Colorado Division of Planning.

ADVANTAGES

Several advantages will accrue to the Colorado map-using community when the
County Maps are completed, thus:

o Comprehensive coverage. Completion of this new series will mean that,
for the first time, the State of Colorado will be mapped with up-to-
date, general-purpose, accurate, topographic maps having a uniform
medium scale. At present, the only complete coverage is at 1:250,000
scale and the 1:24,000-scale series is slightly less than 75 percent
complete.

o Accuracy. County Maps will comply with national standards of map
accuracy.

o Uniform editions. On a state-wide basis, no one map in this new
series will have an edition date that is more than four years older
than any other map in the series. On a county-wide basis, no one
map of a county will have an edition date that is more than one year
older than any other map l)[ that county in this series.

o Currency of information. All County Maps will bear the edition date
of the production year and the information content will be consistent
with that edition date. In every case the information content of the
County Map will be more current than that of the published source
map.

o

Utility. County Maps are general-purpose maps
large number and wide variety of special uses.
is exceptionally appropriate for comprehensive

which can be put to a
The 1:50,000-scale
and regional planning.

o Flexibility. County Maps are designed in a manner which facilitates
reduction and admits enlargement. They can be reprinted (on special
order only) in a variety of combinations consistent with the color-
separation printing process. For example, planimetric maps can be
produced by eliminating the (brown) contour line drawing. Mylar film
positives of the color-separation drawings can be made available
(again on special order only) in at least two thicknesses (.004 and
.007 inch) on at least two surfaces (clear and matte) and in at least
two variations (reverse and direct reading). These mylars can be
printed singly or in combination.
