P,dding water to the site.
b. Removing the toe of the slope without providing adequate
mechani ca I support.
c. Increasing the weight load on the top of the slide.
d. Removing vegetation from the site.
e. Over-steeping the existing slope of the slide.

Development in landslide areas shall be discouraged. Any structural development
in such al'eas bears an extremely high risk and shall only be permitted if the pro-
posed action assumes the high cost of engineered design and construction stabili-
zation measures.

3. GROUND SUBSIDENCE:

Areas which may experience ground subsidence can be found in the study area. Such
areas exist where there has been extensive underground mining activity, While cer-
tain mitigating measures may be taken, it would generally be best to prohibit de-
velopement of such areas.

Ground Subsidence is defined in H. B. 1041 as follows:

"Ground subsidence means a process characterized by downward displace-
ment of surface material caused by natural phenomena such as removal of
underground fluids, natural consolidation, or dissolution of underground
minerals, or by manmade phenomena such as underground mining."

4. TALUS SLOPES:

Talus slopes are formed by the accumulation of rock fragments which have weathered
loose and fallen or slid down slope. Hazards associated with talus slopes are the
continual movement of rock fragments and the potential for rapid down slope move-
"lent if disturbed, The following is recommended:

a. Any structural construction associated should be prohibited in
talus slope areas,
b. Utility lines and roads should be designed to withstand down slope
movement.
c. Site disturbance should be minimized to avoid inducing instability
in the slope,
d. The toe of the talus slope shall not be removed without providing
adequate mechanical support.

5. FAULTS:

Uevelopment should be prohibited on active faults or under cliffs or overhangs in
heavily faulted regions,

6. FLOOO HAZARD:

It is beyond the scope of th is study to identify the extent of the fl oodpl a in. It
is the responsibility of those considering development to evaluate the relationship
of the proposed action against a potential flood.

qeference may be made to the Zoning Regulations for Lake County, Section 7.5 enti-
tled "Flood Control Regulations" )'egarding procedures for designation of a flood-
plain area. The ordinance permits construction within the floodway fringe area by
special permit.

4
