,
I
,
I

SECTION II

STUDY AREA

The following description of the study area is presented to
familiari~e the reader with conditions existing within the
drainage basins.

HISTORY OF BASINS
The first reliable information regarding development of the Weir
and Sanderson Drainage Basins is represented on a 1937 Ft. Logan
D.S.G.S. Quadrangle. In 1937 the Denver city limits extended
west to Sheridan Blvd. and south to Alameda Avenue in the Weir
Gulch Basin. Development had taken place in essentially all
areas within the city limits. Upstream of Alameda Avenue, very
little development is evident on the 1937 quadrangle. A few
scattered houses were indicated in the area of Ohio to Harlan
in what is now Lakewood.

The Sanderson Gulch Basin had experienced virtually no develop-
ment in 1937. The Denver city limits extended west only as
far as Mariposa street. From Mariposa to Sheridan was Arapahoe
County and from Sheridan west, Jefferson County.

Figure 1, Drainageways and Basin Boundaries as shown on the
1937 U.S.G.S Quadrangle, illustrates the natural drainage courses
and basin boundaries existing prior to development of the area.
comparing this map to present development in the area reveals
that most of the main gulches have remained in their historic
locations. Several minor drainageways through basins, however,
have been obliterated by development in recent years. In each
of these cases, major local drainage problems exist which will
not bp ~olv~d hy th~ improvements of the mai~ gulch.

Figure 1 indicates that the historic channel of Weir Gulch below
main reservoir was located approximately one-quarter mile north
of the present man-made Channel route. The extreme difficulties
associated with designing drainage facilities in this area repre-
sents the effect of relocating a channel from its natural course.

Comparison of the 1937 quadrangle to the 1965 quadrangle indicutes
that numerous old irrigation storage reservoirs have bcen
Ob""O-~"~'" ..... ~~-~_.. d^v"o^^"n" '-0-.'"
