Example Applications of Unsteady Flow <br />Models <br /> <br />Numerous applications, in addition to those presented <br />above to illustrate the use of unsteady flow models, have <br />been performed; the following is a brief summary. The <br />one-dimensional unsteady flow program DWOPER, <br />developed by the National Weather Service, has been <br />used to simulate flood wave movement through the <br />Central Basin of the Passaic River in New Jersey. This <br />was a complex routing problem because of flat gradients <br />and flow reversals that were involved (U.S. Army Corps <br />of Engineers 1983). The one-dimensional unsteady flow <br />model UNET has been applied to a 90-mi1e long reach of <br />the Red River of the North to improve analysis of flood- <br />ing on this river. The stody reach was characterized by <br />agricultura1 levees and other flow controlling features on <br /> <br />a wide, flat floodplain (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers <br />199Oc). Cunge et aI. (1980) present several examples of <br />applications to complex natura1 river systems. A study <br />of potentia! mudflow movement in Castle Creek, near <br />Mount Saint Helens was performed (U.S. Army Corps of <br />Engineers 1990e) using the NWS DAMBRK model <br />(Fread 1988). <br /> <br />Section II <br />Theory of Routing Models <br /> <br />5-11.
