Study funds may limit the num- <br />ber of new surveys. If a major tributary has no surveyed <br />cross sections, consider approximating the channel cross <br />section and obtaining overbank information from USGS <br />quadrangle maps. Remember, accuracy and consistency <br />depend on the degree of detail. Details of cross section <br />positioning are presented in Appendix D. <br /> <br />c. Collect stream gage data. Collect flow and stage <br />data for the main stem and all tributaries. It is recom- <br />mended that a data base such as HEC-DSS (U.S. Army <br />Corps of Engineers 199Od) be used 10 organize observed <br />data and maintain, display, and analyze computed results. <br /> <br />d. Develop gaging table. Develop a table showing <br />all stream gaging locations from upstream 10 <br /> <br />5-10 <br /> <br />downstream, all major tributaries with gages, all major <br />tributaries without gages, and reaches with uniform <br />lateral inflow. For an unsteady flow simulation 10 be <br />successful, every square mile of drainage must contribute <br />inflow 10 the model. The gaging table locates the <br />ungaged drainage and identifies the source from which <br />ungaged inflow will be estimated. Table 5-1 is such a <br />table for the Lower Mississippi River. <br /> <br />e. Revise schematic diagram. Revise the diagram by <br />identifying all ihe reaches 10 be modeled, the locations of <br />the gages, and all inflow points.
