<br />REPORT ON TRE <br />FLOODS OF JUNE 1965 <br />SOUTH PLATTE RIVER BASIN <br />COLORADO AND NEBRASKA <br /> <br />I . INTRODUCTION <br /> <br />1. AUTHORITY <br /> <br />This .final report on the floods of June 1965 in the South Platte <br />River basin in Colorado and Nebraska 'is made in compliance with <br />paragraph 172.80 of EM 500-1-1. A flood emergency on the South <br />Platte River and tributaries, Colorado and Nebraska, was declared <br />on 17 June 1965 in accordance, with the provisions of paragraph 161.30 <br />of the Omaha District's Annex A, Emergency Flood Control Activities, <br />to EM 500-1-1. Flood fighting and data collection activities were <br />initiated under authorities contained in paragraphs 122.343, 122.345, <br />182.70 and 182.72 of EM 500-1-1. In addition, the post flood surveys <br />and report were specifically authorized by the Chief of Engineers on <br />19 July 1965 by 2d Indorsement, ENGCW-OE (13 July 1965) to basic letter <br />of 13 July 1965, subject: South Platte River Basin - Post, Flood Report <br />(MROGR-A) . <br /> <br />2. PRIOR REPORTS <br /> <br />A previous report on the floods in the South Platte River basin <br />in June 1965 was submitted to the Chief of Engineers on 10 August 1965 <br />< . <br />in response to a request from a subcommittee of the House Public Works <br />Committee. The report was included in House Committee Print No. 15, <br />89th Congress, 'lst Session, entitled: "The Colorado and Kansas Floods <br />of June 1965 - Report of the Special Subcommittee, to Inspect Flooded <br />Areas in Colorado and Kansas to the Committee on Public Works, House <br />of Representatives, June 1965". <br /> <br />3. PURPOSE <br /> <br />The purpose of this report is to supplement the previous report <br />and to provide a more extensive record of the meteorological conditions <br />of the flood producing storm, the hydrologic data of rainfall and flood <br />discharges, the extent and magnitude of flooding, and the economic <br />damages and social impact caused by the floods. It is intended that <br />the report serve as a source of information on flooding characteristics <br />and damage potentials for public officials and private interests. <br /> <br />4. SCOPE <br /> <br />a. The report provides brief descriptions of the physical and <br />economic characteristics of the South Platte River basin to enable a <br />fuller understanding of the patterns of flooding, and the extent and <br />
