The multiobjective theme for this year's conference
resulted in the submittal of papers and presentations that were all key pieces in
the multiobjective puzzle of reducing flood damages and increasing preservation
of environmental values. The final piece to the puzzle was placed by Chris
Brown, our wrap-up speaker, who provided an excellent summary of the
conference.
1ms year's conference was hosted by the Michigan Department of Natural
Resources, the Michigan Department of State Police, and the Michigan
Stormwater-Floodplain Association. All of these entities had key roles in the
conference and were very visible during the week as they did their part to
involve the 350 conference attendees in conference activities.
The papers included in these proceedings can be considered the most up-to-
date source of information on the multiobjective theme. Topics include river
corridor planning, multi-use case studies, mitigation, watershed management,
and open space. As you review these proceedings, remember that the key to
multiobjective management is to actually put something into place, i.e.,
implementation. Try to use the information provided here, and what you can
gather from other sources, to put together a multiobjective project in your
community that not only provides for flood damage reduction, but also improves
the overall liveability of an area that includes one of our most precious natural
resources-water.

Cover art by Enid Wilson, Cleveland Insmute of Art

This volume is available from:

The Natural Hazards Research and Applications Information Center
Institute of Behavioral Science
Campus Box 482
University of Colorado
Boulder, CO 80309-{)482

Jerry Louthain, Chair
Association of State
Floodplain Managers

and

The Association of State Floodplain Managers
P_O_ Box 2051
Madison, WI 53701
