There aft' no stream g3ging stations or crest gages on any of the
study streams. Knowledge of past f100ding in Montrose is prirr.arily
based on precipitation records, accounts published in previous floodplain
reports,oldnewspaperarticles, local histories, and the personal memories
of a few long-time residents.
Rainfall records have been maintained by the Uncompahgre Valley Water
Users Association at North 6th Street and Park Avenue for over 57y ears
and by the National Weather Service at the Montrose airport for over 27
years. TIIest' precipitation records were studied to determine the dates
of the major recorded storms in the Montrose area. These dates, shown in
Table 4, were then used to search local newspapers for descriptions of
flood events, Hany. Four flood events which occurred in the years 1938,
1963, 1964 Jnd 1967 were found and are described below;

Existinq Storm Sewer Capacities

',I (N, 9th St.) 5 c.f.s.
