This hydrology study was done as
a part of the Wiggins Flood Insurance Study prepared for the
Federal Insurance Administration.

BASIN DESCRIPTION

Kiowa Creek flows northward past the western side of the Town
of Wiggins. The Kiowa Creek basin begins in the Black Forest
area of El Paso County at an elevation of 7,650 feet. Valley widths
range from 5 miles to 12 miles, and the length from the headwaters
to the study area is 100.5 miles.

The Kiowa Creek basin drains a total of approximately 709 square
miles at the study site. There are a number of small retarding
dams in the upper reaches of Kiowa Creek, but these structures
have little effect on flood flows in the lower reaches near
Wiggins. Basin slopes range from 0.9 percent near Wiggins to
6 percent near the headwaters. The channel slope of the basin is
approximately 0.6% and the slope at the study site is 0.2%.

PRECIPITATION

The primary source of flood producing runoff in the Wiggins area
is the summer thunderstorm. Although rainfall data was not
required in the procedure used to determine the final discharges
for Kiowa Creek, the information was needed for alternative
