To assist the U. S. Army Corps 'of Engineers with needed
flood control measures along the 6.4 miles of the South
Platte River which lie adjacent to the City of Littleton,
the citizens of Littleton voted, in 1971, to put up
local funds to assist the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers
in implementing a mutually satisfactory project for
flood control. Presently the city is in the process of
intensive planning on two of the 6.4 miles to incorporate
non-structural flood control measures in an effort to
reduce potential flood damages. The city is acquiring
property included within the lOa-year flood plain limit
within this two mile reach, beginning at the south cor-
porate limits of the city, and'plans to retain the rural,
open space environment of the area (References 6 and 7).

For the remaining 4.4 miles of the South Platte River
which join and, at points, pass through the City of
Littleton, the U. S. Army Corps of Engineers has pro-
posed a structural method of flood control, incorporating
channelization and diking. St~te funds have been
appropriated for right-of-way acquisition, but no action
will be taken until a federal ~nvironmental impact report
is prepared, reviewed, and accepted for the project.

In an effort to control development and use of flood
plain lands, the city, in 1971, adopted a flood plain
zone which overlays the other 9ity-designated land use
zones. This zoning ordinance requires strict compliance,
and designates that appropriate measures be taken to
alleviate potential flood damage where a flood hazard
exists. .

No major structural improvements have been undertaken
by the city on the other tributaries which pass through
the city. Minor improvements have been made on both
Slaughterhouse Gulch and Little Creek in an effort to
minimize damage and flooding f~om more frequent events
than the lOa-year flood.

Major drainageway planning reports have been completed
for the Slaughterhouse Gulc~ the South Tributary to
Slaughterhouse Gulch, and Big Dry Creek as they pass
through the City of Littleton., These reports designate
various structural measures and non-structural actions
which would be appropriate to 'alleviate potential flood
,
damage along these streams. The plans are presently
before the city and await imp~ementation.

,

9
