<br /> <br />. <br /> <br />IntroductIon <br />This SpecIal flood Hazard Information Report for the South <br />Platte River in Morgan County and WaShington County, Colorado was <br />prepared by the Omaha DIstrict, Corps of Engineers, under continu- <br />Ing authority provided by SectIon 206 of the 1960 Flood Control <br />Act (Public law 86-645), as amended. The report was requested by <br />the Colorado Water Conservation Board. The purpose of tl'lls report <br />is to present Information describing the South Platte RIver and <br />its flood plain In Morgan County and In Washington County relative <br />to past flooding as well as to potential future flooding_ This <br />report basically shows the relationship of tile 1973 flood on the <br />South Platte River In Morgon County end Washington County to tile <br />IOO-year flood. Information on the 10-, 50-, and SOO-year floods <br />Is also presented. The Information provided varies from stage- <br />dischargo relatIonshIps at each cross section In the rural areas <br />to water surface profIles In the urban areas. Thr~ghout the study <br />reach, flOOd widths have been IndIcated at each cross section loca- <br />tion. <br /> <br />. <br /> <br />The Information in this report Is Intended for use primarily <br />by planners concerned with the area. This report does not Imply <br />any Federal IntereST or aUThoriTY to zone or regulate The use of <br />tho South Platte River flood plain In Morgan County or In WashingTon <br />CounTy; this Is a local responsibility. "Guidelines tor Reduc- <br />Ing flood Oamages", and a booklet, "Introduction to flood Proofing", <br /> <br />Basin and Stream CharacterIstics <br />The South PlatTe River In Morgan County flows In a general <br />easterly direction from the Wold-Morgan County line to about fort <br />Morgao, Colorado where it gradually turns and flows In a north- <br />easterly directIon Into Washington County To tho WashIngton-Logan <br />County lIne. Throughout this reach the South Platte River flows <br />lnarelativolywelldefinedchannet, This channel Is typically <br />braIded and Is situated In a bnoad shallow vel ley ranging In width <br />from about 1,500 feet to about 21,000 leet and Is flanked by roll- <br />log plaios. The streambed slope ot the South Platte River in <br />Morgan and Washington COunties ;s relatively uniform generally <br />rangIng between 9 feet per m;le dnd 5 feet per mile and averaging <br />6.5 feet per mile.
