The channel conveys <br />the normal flow of the stream. During flood periods, the flow <br />exceeds the capacity of the channel and inundates the overbank <br />or flood plains. The adjacent areas are utilized by Nature to <br />carry the abnormal floVl. In actuality, the channel and portions <br />of the immediately adjacent overbank carry the majority of the <br />flow and constitute the fl oodway. <br />
