2.0 AREA STUDIED

2.l Scope of Study

This Flood Insurance Study covers the
Town of Vail, Eagle County, Colorado.
on the Vicinity Map (Figure l).

incorporated areas of the
The area of study is shown

Floods caused by the overflow of Red Sandstone Creek, Middle Creek,
Spraddle Creek, West Mill Creek, East Mill Creek, Booth Creek,
Pitkin Creek, Bighorn Creek, Black Gore Creek, Gore Creek, Upper
Gore Creek, Lower Gore Creek, and Buffehr Creek were studied in
detail.

Those areas studied by detailed methods were chosen with considera-
tion given to all proposed construction and forecasted development
through 1985.

2.2 Community Description

The Town of Vail is located in the eastern portion of Eagle County,
in central Colorado. Located along Interstate Highway 70, approx-
imately lOO miles west of the City of Denver, Vail is between
the rugged Gore Range to the north and southern Gore Range to
the south and is bordered completely by unincorporated Eagle County
land.

Vail has a population of approximately 4500 permanent residents,
with a projected population of 6000 residents in 1980. Being
an internationally recognized ski resort area, the population
can swell to 24,000 during the winter months. Because of the
seasonal population increase, many of the townspeople are employed
by private businesses that accommodate the tourists. The Town
of Vail and Vail Associates, Inc., also employ many of the people
in town and the surrounding area (Reference 1).

Development in Vail includes condominiums and private homes that
are being built in eastern and western Vail. The center of town
is now fully developed with little construction taking place
(Ref er ence l).

The average annual temperature in Vail is approximately 360P.
The annual precipitation is approximately 30 inches, with two-
thirds of this due to snowfall (References 2 and 3).

Gore Creek flows westerly through Vail toward its confluence with
Eagle River. Through the town, the channel is well defined and
has a slope of approximately 50 feet per mile. It has a width
of approximately 50 feet and its depth is generally between 2
and 3 feet. The lOO-year flood plain is well defined and usually
confined to the channel. The flood plain does, however, break

2
