These rainfall-simulator runs were conducted during <br />a period of frequent rain showers and thunderstorms starting the evening of <br />July 26 and continuing almost daily through August 12. Antecedent soil <br />moisture was quite high, especially for the runs on plots 3 and 5 (fig. 17A <br />and 17C). Severe cracking of the surface soil of plot 5, found during the <br />previous summer, was absent. The soil was uniformly moist and near field <br />capacity (the moisture content at which drainage by gravity ceases) to a <br />depth of about 4 in, and drier below. Soils on plot 3 were near field <br />capacity to a depth of about 8 in, and drier below. Soils on plot 4 were <br />drier than those on plots 3 and 5, but were uniformly moist to a depth of <br />about 10 in, and drier below. <br /> <br />31 <br /> <br />'ii <br />, <br />I <br />
