'-,

38

The preferred location of bubble higbs and shallow frontal zones

is presented in Figure 20. The preferred location for the bubble highs

appears in northeastern Colorado especially along the eastern part of

the South Platte River 'Valley. It is believed that the concavely

shaped topography of the valley helps to trap the cooler surface air

II produced by thunderstorm downdrafts and precipitation. An additional

factor is frequent contribution of both Cheyenne Ridge and Palmer Lake
..

I
I
,
,
;

.

Divide thunderstorms to developing the bubble high over a 24-hour

period.

In southeastern Colorado the occurrence of lasting 'bubble highs

is not so frequent. However, shallow Pacific and Canadian cool air

masses frequently become stationary along the Raton :4esa, These air

masses provide a shallow frontal boundary which enhances the westward

flow of moist plains air into the foothills. At the same time these

"
i .
"

frontal boundaries are a prime location for initial convective genesis.

This is especially true \.hen the frontal boundary is overrun by the

low level jet and an intense low level convergence field is developed.

r

i i
r,
!"I
j, I
I";
I"::
~ ~ :' I
'1!;,:!
"
I:
I'
I'
(i:'.
