<br />way through Drake
<br />
<br />The Big -Thompson River had provided the ideal mountain.
<br />streamside setting for vacationers and residents of Drake before
<br />the July 31 flood,
<br />Afterwards, the rampaging river, swollen by torrential rain,
<br />settled in a route of its own making, tearing away trees, dirt,
<br />homes and parts of U.S. 34-sweeping away lives and leaving a
<br />silt-covered wasteland at the bottom of the canyon.
<br />The dotted line shows the original route of the river-a
<br />dramatic example of the destructive power of rushing flood-
<br />water.
