<br />Preservation <br /> <br />Recommended <br /> <br />Not Recommended <br /> <br />New Construction <br /> <br />New Construction ;s not an appropriate undertaking in a preservation project. <br /> <br />Mechanical Systems: Heating, Air Conditioning, Electrical, Plumbing, Fire Protection <br /> <br />Installing new mechanical systems or additional <br />mechanical services in areas and spaces that will <br />require the least possible alteration to the plan, <br />materials, and appearance to the building. <br /> <br />Causing unnecessary damage to the plan, materials, <br />and appearance of the building when installing new <br />mechanical systems or additional mechanical services <br />that are required to preserve important historic fabric. <br /> <br />Selecting suitable mechanical systems and the most <br />sensitive method of installation in order to preserve <br />important interior and exterior architectural features. <br /> <br />Rewiring early electrical lighting fixtures. <br /> <br />Installing exterior electrical and telephone cables <br />underground, unless they were part of the historical <br />setting. <br /> <br />Attaching exterior electrical and telephone cables to <br />the principal elevations of the building. <br /> <br />Safety and Code Requirements <br /> <br />Complying with code requirements in such a manner <br />that the essential character of a building is preserved <br />intact. <br /> <br />Investigating variances for historic properties afforded <br />under some local codes. <br /> <br />Installing adequate fire prevention equipment in a <br />manner that does minimal damage to the appearance <br />or fabric of a property. <br /> <br />Providing access for the handicapped without <br />damaging the essential character of a property. <br /> <br />24 <br />
