The Main Ditch and County Ditch A are manmadc drainage ditches that <br />convey surface water runoff from the watersheds which are adjacent to the city of <br />Pipestone. The Main Ditch has also been referred to as Judicial Ditch Nwnber I in past <br />studies and by local officials; however, this report will refer to this ditch as Main Ditch. <br />Pipestone Creek is an extension of Main Ditch and is a natural channel that begins within <br />the Pipestone National Monwnent. Figure I presents a vicinity map for the Pipestone <br />area Flooding has occurred periodically along the Main Ditch and County Ditch A as <br />recently as May and July of 1993. The city of Pipestone sustained damages in several <br />locations during the 1993 events. This Problem Identification Report addresses <br />background information, existing flood problems within the city of Pipestone. and results <br />of reconnaissance-level analyses. <br /> <br />This federally funded reconnaissance-level study was initiated in response to a <br />letter dated 6 July 1993 from the city of Pipestone. Minnesota to the Omaha District <br />Corps of Engineers. The Omaha District requested and received funds to initiate a <br />reconnak<;ance study of flood problems on both the Main Ditch and COlDlty Ditch A in <br />the vicinity of Pipestone. <br /> <br />I <br />
