The City

of Fort Collins currently uses a 2 hour event for drainage design hydrologic analyses.

B.

PURPOSE

The purpose of this report is to provide the City of Fort Collins with a precipitation frequency analysis
(statistical analysis) that will access the impact of the additional period of record on the rainfall statistics
currently being used for drainage design and. depending on the study results, recommend the use of
new depth-duration-frequency and intensity-duration-frequency curves for use in the updated version
of their criteria manual.

In addition to the statistical analysis, a qualitative precipitation study (qualitative study) was also

performed. The purpose of the qualitative precipitation study was to investigate the question of whether

there is a significant difference in the amount of rainfall that falls on the western part of the City of Fort

Collins as compared to the amount of rainfall that falls on the eastern part of the City. The data used in

the study was obtained from the Mountain States Weather Services and included weather watcher reports

from the largest storms in the Fort Collins area over the last fourteen years.

C.

COORDINATION:

This study was performed with the guidance of a technical advisory committee composed of the
following individuals:
Susan Hayes
Robert Smith
Dr. Duane Boes
Tom Browning
Rex Bums
Lisa Dunn
Bob Davidson
Nolan Doesken
Dave Frick
Don Heyse
John Liou
Larry Lang
John Morris
Dr. Thomas Sanders

Stormwater Utility (Project Coordinator)
Stormwater Utility
CSU Statistics Department
Colorado Water Conservation Board
Larimer County Engineering
Larimer County Engineering
Fort Collins
CSU Atmospheric Sciences Department
Ayres & Associates
CSU Chemistry Department
FEMA Denver.
